1967 Sergeant Perpper

Sunday 4th June 1967

Jimi Hendrix plays Brian Epstein’s Saville Theatre at 135 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8AH, watched by Paul McCartney and Jane Asher alongside George Harrison and Pattie Boyd.

Afterwards, Paul McCartney hosted a party at his home at 7 Cavendish Avenue, St Johns Wood, London NW8 9JE

Jimi starts the show by playing “Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” released on the eponymous LP the UK only 2 days earlier on the previous Friday.

This makes a lasting impression on Paul McCartney, who described it as amongst the greatest honours he had ever received. What particularly impressed him was the limited time Jimi had to rehearse it. Paul still includes it as an anecdote in his own concerts today, over 50 years after the event (see clip below).

And who can blame him?

Also playing that evening were:

*George Harrison would be sued for “subconsciouly plagiarising” a song by The Chiffons (He’s So Fine) with his song “My Sweet Lord” – More

Winston Lennon
